A graduate of the Exole des Beaux Arts de Indochine in 1931, Vu Cao Dam is an important Vietnamese painter of the 20th c. Born in Hanoi in 1908, he migrated to Paris in the 1930's. Moving to the south of France in 1949, Marc Chagall was his neighbor and a great influence on his work. He was also strongly influenced by the French impressionists,Matisse and Bonnard.

Pyle was a member of the Salmagundi Club, 1876; Associate National Academy, 1905; and the National Academy, 1907. He studied in Philadelphia with Francis Van der Weilen from 1869 to 1872. From 1898 to 1902 Pyle taught his proteges at his studio in Chadds Ford, PA, and became known as the founder of the 'Brandywine School'. His students included N.C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, V. Oakely and H. Dunn. He is often referred to as the 'Father of American Illustration".

From the estate of Harrison Horblit (1912-1988) noted bibliophile and philanthropist. Horblit and his wife Jean were patrons of Margules, and upon the death of the artist, inherited the entire body of works of the artist. CRN Auctions sold the bulk of the art in March, 2007.
