from Belcourt Castle, Newport, RI. Belcourt, having 60 rooms, was built as grand Bellevue Ave. summer cottage in 1891-4 for bachelor Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont, who in 1896 married Alva E. Smith, the recently divorced wife William K. Vanderbilt. The deed was given to Alva as a wedding present. After 12 years of marriage, Oliver died, and Alva made numerous renovations to suit her social ambitions. Belcourt opened for public tours in 1957.
